Drowning in Red Ink, Er …. Let’s Call it Maroon

Here’s the story behind this cartoon I created:
No one likes to give bad news. I remember perusing the business section, reading the phrase “drowning in red ink,” and thinking about how you’d spin really awful financial news: think “bailout” vs. “rescue.”
After a few different tries . . . Burgundy? Not quite right. Merlot? Wine connotations might confuse the gag.
Eventually, I landed on maroon and that seemed funniest to me.

I’m sorry Mark, but I could not fully grasp the point here? Would you mind to share more about it?

At the risk of explaining it to death (and thereby killing the gag) it’s just that the word maroon isn’t charged like red when it comes to business.
Hope that helps…

Nobody likes to hear the word “red” when it comes to business! Your cartoons always make me snicker out loud. Thanks for the laugh and keep em coming!
